Intent - why are we teaching this?

At Grampound with Creed, our aim is to ensure that every child is viewed as an artist. Our art and design curriculum aims to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design so those some pupils may develop aspirations beyond school. Our pupils are given ample opportunity to create, develop and experiment with their art skills which develop their cultural awareness as well as their art and design skills. Due to the progressive and discrete nature of our art and design curriculum, pupils are taught and inspired to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design and learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity, behaviours and wealth of our nation. The imagination and creativity of every pupil flourishes so they can shine their light to produce unique art work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. By the end of Key Stage Two, our pupils are proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques and can effectively evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. Every pupil will know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Implementation – how will we achieve this?
At Grampound with Creed, our art and design curriculum is taught and delivered in a progressive, sequence to ensure that by the time our pupils leave key stage two, the expectations of the National Curriculum have been met or exceeded. Art is taught discretely using the Cornerstones curriculum which focuses on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum and provides high quality, well thought out lesson plans and resources that are designed to demonstrate progression. We focus on progression of knowledge and skills and discrete vocabulary progression also forms part of the units of work. At Grampound with Creed, we ensure that art and design is given the same importance as the core subjects as a fundamental way in which children’s cultural capital is flourished.

At Grampound with Creed, our pupils have many opportunities to experience art and design on educational visits and through our Wild Tribe curriculum. The children have explored local museums/art galleries, have had visitors into school to share art and design learning and have hands on experiences through extra-curricular outdoor learning opportunities. Educational visits are another opportunity for the teachers to plan for additional art learning outside the classroom.

Impact – what is the impact?

The impact of our art and design curriculum is measured through ongoing assessment which takes place every lesson in addition to before and end of unit checks. Discussion with pupils about their learning in art and design, images and videos of practical elements of learning and through the scrutiny of sketch books also contributed effectively to the impact monitoring of our art and design curriculum. Within our annual reports, assessment is also shared with parents and carers of progress and attainment in art and design.
