Post-phonics reading at Grampound with Creed

We've been practising the skill of 'text marking' in whole class reading. The children work in pairs or small groups to develop their reading fluency by choosing words or phrases they want to emphasise with enhanced expression and volume, for example “Let’s say the word cautiously in a suspicious voice.”
They then have time to rehearse this before performing to each other which is greatly developing their confidence as readers!
In whole class reading, we have been exploring emotions that reflect the feelings and thoughts of characters at different points within our novels. This has been a fantastic way to identify synonyms and discover new vocabulary when making inferences.
Our approach to post-phonics reading ensures that fluency is taught specifically alongside comprehension so that every child learns to read with confidence and enjoyment. This half-term, we are practising our fluency by choral and echo reading, text marking, and rehearsing in partners before performing and assessing ourselves.
