English and Early Reading Lead

Intent  - Why are we teaching this?

At Grampound with Creed we provide a rich, varied English curriculum to enable children to become confident readers and writers. We provide them with many opportunities to explore different text types and support them to learn many writing skills. We provide children with carefully considered story books, poems and non –fiction texts to inspire and ignite their imagination. We believe that the English skills taught enable children to access the wider curriculum and the skills learnt underpin their success beyond the primary school .

We ensure that all children meet their next steps by breaking the learning journey in to small steps that demonstrate their understanding along the way. We aim to create a love of reading across the school and celebrate all writing achievements as part of our Celebration Collective worships. This provides pupils with the opportunity to be the light and recognise their achievements.

Implementation - How is this being taught in the classroom?

Our English curriculum is mapped out as a learning journey and the children use the same approach in year 1 to 6. Children are introduced to high quality texts at the start of each Learning Journey. They have the opportunity to read/ discuss and magpie key features. Children then focus on the features highlighted in the example text (LIGHT-Lets inspire ( with a ) high-quality text) to research and learn about them further to enable them to use them independently in their writing. Children then have the opportunity with the teacher to create a guided write ( Guided LIGHT) where they can discuss ideas, up-level the vocabulary and discuss the text features. Children then  demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through an independent write to show what they have learnt, express their own ideas creatively (Shine Time!) ( See Flow Chart)

Impact - What is the effect?

By the end of Key Stage One and Two, pupils will have met the requirements of the National Curriculum. Every pupil will be able to offer their ideas and opinions about a range of texts/ poems/ non– fiction and will leave our school with a passion for reading different texts and sharing novels. Children attain well at the end of Foundation stage, Key stage 1 and Key stage 2 and will know and use a range of rich vocabulary.
